Is your CPA becoming a dinosaur?

With the constant changes to the IRS tax code and financial reporting requirements, many CPA’s are struggling to keep their knowledge and resources up-to-date, leading many CPA’s to consider early retirement or other business ventures. Meanwhile, progressive accounting firms are dedicating their resources to evolve their practice by hiring experienced professionals and keeping abreast to the ongoing, and upcoming, changes implemented by the IRS and the AICPA. By doing this, progressive accounting firms are better suited to be a proactive resource to their clients.

How to identify a progressive CPA firm:

• Company website – Going to a CPA firm’s website is a great way to see how a firm values staying in touch with the latest marketing trends and techniques. If a firm has not felt it necessary to update their own website since the start of the internet age in the 1990’s, how can they be expected to be proactive with their client’s needs?

• Product stagnation – Go back through the last 3 to 5 years of tax returns and financial reports provided by your CPA and see how much the product has changed. Minimal changes to your tax return and financial report could mean there are important disclosures or key activities of your organization that aren’t being properly reported and disclosed.

• Proactive CPA – Do you see or speak to your CPA once a year? Does your auditor stop in once a year to churn out an audit report, collect a fee, and shout out, “see you next year!” on their way out the door? A proactive CPA keeps in touch with their client throughout the year so they can offer tips and recommendations to clients in real-time, so they can be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Progressive accounting firms are finding ways to be essential business consultants to their clients in order to provide the best service possible. I challenge you to ask yourself: where does your CPA rank? Is your CPA part of the progressive accounting firm movement or are they a dinosaur?
